Antigua, Guatemala

Learning about the world and how to live in it is the essence of education.

  • How It Works
The online course work will begin early February and continue until the middle of March. Then, during the March Break, students will journey to a location that supplements their studies. Upon returning home students will complete the remainder of the course online - allowing for reflection and follow up research. The course will be completed by the middle of May.
  • Why It Works
Knowledge, experience and reflection are the three pathways to a sound education. MEI's online credits combine the academic knowledge of online course work with the experience and reflection of travel.
  • Why Study World Issues in Central America
Students will travel to the third capital of Guatemala - Antigua and its surrounding communities - in order to explore the reality of the developing world. While working with members of these small communities, students will learn hands-on skills required to implement selected development projects. Our discussions and readings will focus on the problems at hand and the possible solutions on a local, national and global level.
  • Courses

  • World Issues, Grade 12 (Includes Community Service Projects)
The World Issues course will explore pressing concerns such as the relationship between human and natural systems, different forms of power and governance, and the role of culture and tradition. Students will fine-tune both their writing and oral skills as well as further cultivate their critical, analytical and problem-solving abilities through a variety of written assignments and oral presentations. Discussions will tackle issues ranging from global warming and the depletion of natural resources to tourism, development and the role of technology.
