Bienvenue a Paris!
July 7th 2016
We have landed safe and sound in the city of lights; no lost luggage, no lost students, and no lost minds to speak of! It has been an absolute pleasure travelling overseas with this group- special thanks to Ryan and Spencer for helping to make sure everyone’s luggage was safe.
Really, we are so lucky–what a day it is to be in Paris! The energy is astronomical as Parisians and MEI-ers alike celebrate France’s conquering of Germany in the Euro cup semi-finals with screams, whistles, and red/white/blue face paint. Well… ok… truth: a lot of MEI-ers were sleeping before the game ended- jet lag is a valid reason, oui? And, a second truth be told, some of us were cheering for Germany! Alas, not matter which camp we fell in, I think it is safe to say we have all had a satisfying and full day.
As you probably already know, MEI prides itself on its ethos of hard work, learning from one’s surroundings, and having fun while doing it all! Today was a fruitful sampling all of the above. Once we landed and settled, the students got down to work- we headed over to the Place de la Republique, an iconic square located very close to our hotel!) to have a look at this icon of freedom and democracy against all forms of dictatorship. After a discussion about its significance to our modern world, we dove into our coursework, prepping for the upcoming assignments and getting all the administrative fun out of the way! The students then had a couple of hours of free time; some, like Dana and Sarah checked out vintage clothing stores and had a relaxing rest by the river, others went to cafés, and still others to books stores. Dinner and the game wrapped up our evening. Busy day, but you can bet tomorrow will be just as full- we will be headed to Versailles!
With that, it’s time to hit the hay! Have a great day
