Why Study English at Herstmonceux Castle, London and Oxford?

The MEI Castle English program provides an opportunity to embark on an MEI-style educational odyssey for three weeks in the summer at East Sussex’s picturesque Herstmontceaux Castle, and on location in London and Oxford. Combined with online digital coursework prior to and after travel, students are able to achieve a full course credit in their chosen English program stream.

Courses Offered

English—Grade 11

The grade 11 English course gives students the opportunity to hone their presentation, analytical and critical thinking skills through assignments and activities that incorporate both oral and written communication.

English—Grade 12

The grade 12 English course focuses on the refinement of literacy, communication and analytical skills. Students build on their understanding of academic language and practise using it confidently in discussion and argumentation both in oral and written forms.

Preparation and Course Work

In order to ease into the program, students have access to the course website, where reading lists will be posted. Course preparation is spread out over four weeks: our first two-week preparation session begins in early May, focusing on novel studies; the second two-week session begins in late June, focusing on completing small assignments. These online sessions are designed to connect students with their teachers and classmates and help complete short tasks to alleviate the workload during the summer. Students are required to complete all pre-departure work prior to departure to ensure they are ready to hit the ground running while overseas.

Departure From Toronto (Day 1)

Our North American departure hub is Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. Five hours prior to our departure, a short meeting will be held at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel, Terminal 3, to distribute course packs and maps and to clarify travel procedures. All students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to the Sheraton Gateway Hotel. Students making alternate arrangements must contact MEI before March 31.

Herstmonceux Castle (Day Day 2–9)

Our journey begins at Herstmonceux Castle. As students settle in and become acquainted with the castle, they find it is truly the ultimate academic environment. During their time here, students sample the works of British authors from Byron, Shelly and Dickens to Joyce, Tolkien, and Rowling. Small-group workshops provide skill-building sessions that help students excel at the university level. Students also enjoy day trips to nearby towns for a closer look at contemporary living in the area. The castle fosters a sense of community that only comes from being in a supportive environment, in a remarkable location.

London (Day 10–15)

In London, we broaden our English narrative by immersing ourselves in the stories of social turbulence that led to the War of the Roses. The ghosts come alive as we follow the political and geographical establishment of the Tudor dynasty, with particular focus given to the complex reign of Elizabeth I. Students will study William Shakespeare’s Richard III and view a live production of the play at the Globe theatre. Our study of essay writing and poetry will delve into the works of Mary Wollstonecraft, Jonathan Swift and James Joyce as we conduct workshops at Hyde Park and present our rants live at Speaker’s Corner.

Oxford (Day 16–21)

Oxford is our final destination and an ideal location to get a taste of university life at one of the most prestigious establishments in the world. Here, students will develop their own literary tours that focus on connecting literature and locations throughout the city that culminate in an afternoon tea at The Randolph – a tradition at Oxford. Here, students enjoy homemade scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream as they ease into the last days of the program, their concluding ISU interview, and their final exam.

Departure from London Airport (Day 21)
